5 Self-Care Tips at Home To Relax Your Body & Spirit

Shelter in place is a challenge but an oppurtunity to indulge in self-care

The world is working together to care for each other. But somehow, we can forget to take care of ourselves. Now more than ever, it is important to prioritize self-care.

1. DIY Relaxing Spa

Spa salons are closed. But it doesn't mean we can't have a spa at home.

Homemade Scrubs
Mix a tablespoon of honey and a tablespoon of sugar and apply gently to the face. Sugar will help you exfoliate and honey will disinfect and purify your face. Leave the mixture on for 5 minutes, rinse with cold water and you will feel the difference!

For the body, reuse the coffee from your coffee maker! Just add 3 tablespoons of coffee and 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil. It can be coconut, almonds, or olive oil. Use whichever you have you have at home. Mix and apply all over your body while taking a bath or shower. It will leave your skin smooth and clean!

Mask for Split Ends
Make a mask with one ripe banana, one avocado, two tablespoons of honey, one tablespoon of milk, and one tablespoon of olive oil. Stir everything and apply from ends to ends in your hair and let it set for 30 minutes and rinse!

No time and no ingredients? Then think of your shower as a relaxing spa. Deep conditioning your hair softens and nourishes your hair. Scrubbing your skin refresh and renew your skin. Soaking in a bath is a spa experience. Using other tools, like essential oils, candles, or music can recreate a relaxing spa at home.

Lip Exfoliation
Apply Vaseline to your lips and with a clean toothbrush, brush your lips in a circular motion. It will serve to remove dead cells but also to reactivate circulation!

Do you want your nail polish to dry faster?
Fill a bowl with ice water. When you finish painting your nails, dip your hands in the ice wáter for 30 seconds to make the enamel dry faster! When you want to remove it easier, soak them in warm water to soften the enamel.

2. Create New Rituals

When "shelter in place" was announced, most of us are caught unprepared. All of a sudden, we can't do the things that we used to do on a regular basis. Like going to a park or strolling at the mall. But we can still have a ritual as we practice social distance.

  • Starting or reigniting a hobby.
  • Keeping in touch with friends and family. We may not be next to each other, but we can still communicate with them as we social distance. Call to hear a familiar voice. Make a video call to feel closer.
  • Do Something. Boredom creates stress. If you are feeling stressed, do something to put your mind in order. If household chores cause your stress - then wash the dishes, clean the house, or arrange your clothes. The more order you have in your home, the calmer your mind remains.

3. Learn New Recipes

The recipe might be old but it is new at the moment. Baking and cooking can have a calming effect in today's stressful times.

4. Meditate and Deep Breathe

  • 1. Set an alarm to gently sound in 5 minutes.
  • 2. Get comfortable either sitting in a chair or on the floor, etc. Play relaxing music or nature sounds.
  • 3. Take a deep breath while focusing on how the air enters, hold as what you can tolerate, and feel the air as it leaves your lungs.
  • 4. If thoughts come to your mind, let them pass and refocus on your breathing. You are already meditating!

5. Exercise

Gyms are closed but not a reason not to exercise. Exercise can calm and still the mind. So roll out your mat and stretch at home.
