Notes regarding time

Description

Enjoy an afternoon with the Yoko Koto Ensemble as they perform beautiful and authentic Japanese songs in celebration of Asian American & Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander Heritage Month. The Yoko Koto Ensemble will be accompanied by Dennis Fitzpatrick, performing the Shakuhachi flute.

The traditional Koto—also called “the Japanese Harp,”—is a hollow, wooden instrument made of strong but flexible paulownia wood, about six feet long, with 13 strings. It is the official national instrument of Japan. The Yoko Koto Ensemble's performance is designed to inspire audiences to reflect on the deeper, symbolic meanings represented in the beautiful and evocative art of the Koto. At the end of the performance, audience members will be invited on stage to play a few notes.

Yoko is one of the few artists in the world who is a virtuoso on the 13-string Koto, the 17 and 21-string Koto, and the 3-string Sangen. Yoko was taught Koto by the "Grand Koto Master," Shyoin Yamase, the 5th and 6th generation. She is listed in the Las Vegas Clark County Historical Archives Directory as a historical resource for those interested in the culture of Japan. She has been awarded the Folklife Apprenticeship Grant four times by the Nevada Arts Council.
