It is Cooler to be Kind - The Cool Bean Storytime

The new “too-cool-for-school” picture book from bestselling creators Jory John and Pete Oswald

By Donnah Opelac, publisher & editor December 2, 2019

As parents, we want to instill good values to our kids. We want them to grow up kind, good-natured individuals. We want them to develop empathy - or putting oneself in someone else shoe. The book, The Cool Bean, tells a story of how kids can develop empathy and kindness to their playmates, school mates and everyone else.

I was privileged to host one of the twelve storytimes before the book will be available to the public. The book is geared toward the emotional learning of children.

It tells of a story of how the "cool beans" are famous and popular. Everyone knows the cool beans. They’re sooooo cool. Were they famous because of how they move? Or their sunglasses?

And then there’s the uncool has-bean . . .

Always on the sidelines, one bean unsuccessfully tries everything he can to fit in with the crowd—until one day the cool beans show him how it’s done.

The cool beans are cool because they were kind to the uncool has-been.

It is a perfect read-aloud with kids about important topics for building social-emotional learning such as:
  • how to be kind to others
  • what empathy is and why it's important
  • what it really means to be cool
Kindness is a small gesture but it is everything.

In addition to the book, the publisher also sent activity sheets, sticker sheets, and cool sunglasses that we use at our storytime.

The Cool Bean is the third book on the series from Jory John and Pete Oswald, each book teaches young readers an important lesson to live by:
  • THE BAD SEED - reminds us that positive change is possible for all of us
  • THE GOOD EGG - reminds us of the importance of balance, self-care, and accepting those who we love (even if they are sometimes a bit rotten).
